Chapter Sixteen

Greta waved across the bright, welcoming restaurant. Her gaze fell to Harper’s hand entwined with Lucas’s, her smile widened, but her eyes held no surprise. Their group of friends did love to gossip and speculate.

She wondered who told Greta. Cindy or Will?

Scanning the room, Harper was curious if her cousin would come tonight. With things strained between them, would Cindy support Will?

With the men of her past, she wouldn’t have bothered. Although, Harper suspected things were different with Will, and she’d show up sooner or later.

She tugged Lucas’s hand. “Come on. Let’s sit with Greta and Jacob.”

“Sounds good.” He rested an arm around her, and she relaxed into him while checking out the restaurant. The combination of exposed brick, bleached cement floors, and a mix of thick, industrial oak tables gave the place a polished, welcoming feel.

“Will and his business partner out-did themselves. This place is gorgeous,” she said.

“It is LEED certified too.” Lucas shook his head, laughing. “That was a fun evening with the Grimm brothers.”

“Something in your voice tells me you aren’t telling the whole truth.”

“Possibly.” He kissed her forehead.

She loved his open affection. A woman with him would never wonder if she was cherished.

“What happened? Did the restaurant have a bunch of issues?” she asked.

He chuckled. “No. Thankfully. It was more me and Will were grumpy assholes who kept giving each other a hard time.”

They’d reached the table, and he pointed at Jacob. “And this guy didn’t like his eco-duties.”

“That’s right.” Jacob snapped his fingers. “I have a threat to carry out with my big brother.” Sitting straight, he smiled at his wife. “Do you have any tampons?”

Greta’s lips twitched, but her voice was firm. “No, and I’m not even going to ask why you need them.”

“Fine,” he muttered. He focused on Lucas, eyeing his arm around Harper. “I see you’re in a better mood than that night.”

A light flush colored Lucas’s neck while a sliver of guilt ran through her.

Okay, knowing she mattered to him had delight chasing alongside her remorse.

“Harper,” Maggie called from the other end of the table. She patted the empty seat next to her.

Nodding, Harper walked with Lucas toward them. She was thrilled to have the chance to chat with her newest friend.

Tanner’s arm was hung loosely around Maggie’s shoulder, rubbing circles on her upper arm, and she rested a hand on his thigh. While both were extremely attractive, they made such an odd couple.

Maggie, with her multicolored purple and black hair, tattoos, and nose piercing, didn’t match Tanner’s short, neat hair, ink-free skin, and almost conservative clothes. However, the way love wrapped around their private smiles and quiet touches screamed devotion and passion.

It made Harper’s heart hurt with longing. Would she ever have that with someone? With Lucas?

She could admit to herself, she wanted it with him.

“How’s it going with the gallery?” Maggie asked as they sat. Catching Harper’s surprise, she clarified, “Tanner mentioned it when he was working on your account. Anyway, I went online to check out your art.
